FRISCO, Texas – McNeese second-baseman Nate Fisbeck is the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Incarnate Word hurler Bernie Martinez earns Pitcher of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Fisbeck powered the Cowboys to five-straight wins last week with a home run in three of the last four games, totaling 10 RBI in that span. The junior hit .500 on the week with a 1.227 slugging percentage.McNeese (8-4) hosts Louisiana at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday before hitting the road for a three-game series at ULM, beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday.Martinez earned his third win, tying him for most in the conference and second-most in the nation, in the Cardinals’ 6-5 upset of No. 23 Texas A&M on Wednesday and picked up a save in the series finale against UT Arlington, a 6-2 victory. UIW (8-4) will face Texas State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday before opening conference play by hosting a three-game slate against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The first matchup is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.Hitter of the Week – Nate Fisbeck, McNeese – Junior – Second Baseman – The Woodlands, TexasFisbeck hit the first of his four blasts last week in an 8-1 win over Alcorn on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two stolen bases and four runs scored. He followed it up Saturday with a two-homer performance against Holy Cross, including a walk-off three-run shot to initiate the run rule.Posting back-to-back 3-for-5 outings, Fisbeck homered in his first at-bat against Nicholls on Sunday and roped two RBI doubles in the seventh and ninth innings to erase a 4-1 Colonels lead and force extra innings. Of the Cowboys’ 37 runs last week, Fisbeck either scored or drove in 21 of them. Martinez induced an inning-ending double play and allowed just one run on two hits the rest of the way as UIW held on for their second-straight Power-5 victory.On Sunday, Martinez inherited another dangerous situation with the bases loaded and UTA one swing away from taking a 6-5 lead. However, he got Josh Minjarez to fly out to escape the jam.
