Athletics double up Flyers

JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Flyers suffered their third loss in four games in 2018 after falling to the Grande Prairie Athletics Wednesday night.The Flyers seemed to be a step behind the visitors from the opening face-off as the Athletics scored their first of four goals in the first frame, thirty-seven seconds into the game. They would add another in the middle stanza to take a 5-0 lead into the final twenty minutes of play.The Flyers finally woke up as the scoreboard read 6-0 visitors when Adam Horst found the back of the net at 2:47 of the third period on the power play after burying a rebound from in tight, assisted by Jeff Shipton and Rylan Sideroff. Six minutes later Jake Ebner accepted a pass from Daylen Pearson and goaltender Travis McLean, skated up the ice form his own zone, slide the puck through his legs back to himself and roofed a shot that sent the water bottle airborne. Ebner tallied his second of the period with a minute and change remaining after some down low pressure from Reid Campbell, Jeff Fast found Ebner open in the slot. At the final buzzer Athletics 6 – Flyers 3.- Advertisement -With the loss, the Flyers fell to 10-5 and remain in second place behind the Athletics for the top spot in the Western Division in the North Peace Hockey League standings.“We can’t play scared,” said head coach Andrew Leriger. “Lately we seem to be playing scared to not allowing goals especially in the first when you play tense like that more often than not you get scored on. We have to be relaxed, at the end of the day, it’s hockey a game these guys know how to play. I thought we showed some fight in the third to grab a couple goals back which is something we can build on.”Next up for the Flyers is a trip to Dawson Creek for Game Two of the Coy Cup showdown on Thursday night.
