Dodgers were ‘shocked’ by Joe Kelly’s eight-game suspension

first_img Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Joe Kelly’s eight-game suspension landed with a thud in the Dodgers’ clubhouse on Wednesday.“I think we were all pretty shocked,” outfielder AJ Pollock said. “It seemed very, very harsh.”“I think that this is an unprecedented number for a pitcher,” Manager Dave Roberts said.Roberts wasn’t alive in August 1965 when Giants pitcher Juan Marichal clubbed Dodgers catcher John Roseboro over the head with a baseball bat. That incident left Roseboro with a gash in his head that reportedly required 14 stitches to close. Marichal’s punishment? A 10-game suspension. Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco “They’re really trying to get away from balls going at players,” Roberts said.Kelly appeared to taunt Correa as he walked off the field. Both benches cleared, and players gathered in the middle of the field. MLB’s Operations Manual for the 2020 season stipulates that players or managers “who leave their positions to argue with umpires, come within six feet of an umpire or opposing player or manager for the purpose of argument, or engage in altercations on the field are subject to immediate ejection and discipline, including fines and suspensions.”Roberts was suspended one game after Tuesday’s incident, and he served the suspension Wednesday. Astros manager Dusty Baker was fined an undisclosed amount. Kelly is waiting for the league to hear his appeal.Pollock wasn’t part of the 2017 Dodgers team that lost a seven-game World Series to the Astros, but he was among many upset to learn Astros players were complicit in an illegal “banging scheme” designed to steal signs from opposing pitchers during the 2017 regular season and postseason. Correa and Bregman were both on the Astros’ roster that year.Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pollock said the Astros “crossed the line pretty significantly.” Several Dodgers who were on the 2017 club have spoken harsher words. In spring training, Cody Bellinger said the Astros “stole a ring from us.” In January, Justin Turner said the Astros had not “earned the right to be called champions.” Presciently, pitcher Alex Wood said in February that “somebody will take (revenge on the Astros players) into their own hands and they’ll get suspended more games than any of those guys got for the biggest cheating scandal in 100 years.”An accurate prediction is not proof of intent, however, and that’s essential to Kelly’s appeal.“(MLB) is trying to find some intent, and that’s a really hard thing to find,” Pollock said. “This game has policed itself for so many years. You hope that teams are all being treated equally. I don’t know if (MLB) is doing that. For me personally, most baseball guys that are true baseball guys, they would say that’s outrageous. That’s just me coming from where the game’s been. I don’t know. (An 8-game suspension) just didn’t seem right to me, and especially with what happened with the Astros, there’s been no suspensions on that end. It’s just bizarre. I don’t think anyone’s too happy about it. We’re hoping that gets significantly reduced, because eight games in a 60-game season is outrageous.”Manager Dave Roberts #30 of the Los Angeles Dodgers talks with pitcher Clayton Kershaw #22 before the MLB game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on July 30, 2020 in Phoenix, Arizona. Kershaw was placed on the injured list on July 23, hours before his scheduled Opening Day start.Roberts said Kershaw threw a bullpen prior to Thursday’s game and will return Sunday in Phoenix or Monday in San Diego. Walker Buehler will start the other game.Gonsolin, a 26-year-old right-hander, went 4-2 across 40 innings in 11 games last season. He was among the players who did not report to summer camp on time for undisclosed reasons, and began the season at the Dodgers’ alternate training site on the USC campus. Roberts said Gonsolin drove to meet the team in Phoenix.ALSOThe Dodgers designated Terrance Gore for assignment and recalled left-handed pitcher Victor Gonzalez from their alternate site. … Gore appeared in two games without logging a plate appearance. He played one inning in center field Sunday against the Giants, and pinch-ran in the Dodgers’ 13-inning win in Houston on Wednesday night. … Gonzalez, 25, reached Triple-A as a relief pitcher last season and has yet to make his MLB debut. … Roberts said the three-man “taxi squad” is subject to change after each road series, but the team is wary of forcing players to travel unnecessarily.Related Articles How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies The Dodgers are scheduled to play 60 games in the regular season. Kelly’s eight-game suspension is the equivalent of a 22-game ban in a 162-game season. The pitcher immediately appealed the punishment. He was available to pitch Wednesday in Houston and again Thursday in Phoenix. The suspension was meted out by Chris Young, MLB’s senior vice president who oversees on-field operations and umpires. Young and Roberts were teammates on the San Diego Padres, and Roberts exchanged text messages with Young after the discipline was announced.“I pleaded our case,” Roberts said. “I don’t have any say in it, unfortunately.”Roberts said that in MLB’s opinion, Kelly was throwing with intent when pitches sailed behind the shoulders of Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s game. Two years ago, when Kelly pitched for the Boston Red Sox, he was suspended six games for throwing at Tyler Austin of the New York Yankees.Austin was hit by a pitch, while Correa and Bregman were not.
