Hughes. “I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to go ice fishing or visit any state-managed park to enjoy many family-friendly activities free of charge.”The event is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. A listing of Free Fishing Weekend activities is online at www.michigan.gov/freefishingRep. Hughes also emphasizes caution during the weekend, especially on ice surfaces that can be affected by the current mild winter. Potential anglers are asked to speak with area guides or outdoor businesses for information on ice conditions as well as taking care when observing large cracks or fissures on the ice, never going out on the ice alone and informing a friend or family member where you will be.The summer Free Fishing Weekend is currently scheduled for June 11-12.
