Residents of the 56-home complex gathered at the site and said there had been about four fatalities and as many as 15 crashes along the stretch of freeway between Yosemite Avenue and the Cochran Street bridge. But most were baffled as to why the crashes occur along the relatively straight stretch of highway. James Murphy, who has lived in White Oak for 14 years, said he remembers about 10 cars coming down the embankment, some landing on the town house road and some at the base of the freeway. “I have no idea what causes them, but it all seems to be happening in this one stretch,” he said. SIMI VALLEY – A woman died Wednesday after being thrown from her car as it careened down an embankment along the Ronald Reagan Freeway and onto a street in a Simi Valley town house complex. Capt. Cliff Williams of the California Highway Patrol’s Moorpark station said the Ford Explorer was apparently headed east on the freeway when it went down the embankment and struck the top of a block wall just east of Yosemite Avenue. It landed on Rothko Lane, a small roadway next to the White Oak town house complex. No home was damaged. Williams said investigators were trying to find witnesses to explain what caused the crash – whether only the Explorer or also another vehicle was involved. Boths sides of the Explorer were smashed. A message on its license-plate frame, which was broken off, says “Happiness Is Being a Grandmother.” Not far from where the woman died Wednesday, there were some plastic birds of paradise left beside a tree where a young woman died in another crash earlier this year, said Carol Macksoud, whose home is near the site of both crashes. “I’ve been here since 1997 and I’ve probably seen 15 cars come down. I went up on the freeway once to try to figure out why,” she said. Eric Leach, (805) 583-7602 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
