American Horror Story Cult Trailers are Here and Hope You Like Clowns

first_img American Horror Story Takes Us Back to the Days of Witches and WarlocksThe Best American Horror Story Funko Pops! Now that we know the title of this year’s American Horror Story season, FX has moved on to the scaring the crap out of us phase. For the past few weeks, they’ve released some absolutely terrifying teasers hinting at the nature of AHS: Cult. Whatever its true nature turns out to be, one thing is certain: It contains a lot of clowns. The scary clown phenomenon appears to be back in full force. Just a couple days after the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s It hits theaters, Ryan Murphy will give us his take. Which apparently involves some kind of cult. We’re not going to get any sleep this fall, are we?So there appears to be some sort of clown cult. Based on the hints Ryan Murphy has previously given us, the cult may revolve around Twisty, the murderous circus clown from season four, or “Freak Show.” Maybe his actions have inspired a growing group of fanatical worshipers? Then, there’s this bit of unsettling imagery. The hollow face is frightening enough, but then in a later video, Murphy/FX has seen fit to pile on another phobia.Oh good. Bees. My favorite. This isn’t just a one-off thing, either. It’s looking like bees will play a big role in the upcoming season, at least if this next video is anything to go by.So yeah, bees, beehives and creepy hands reaching out to pull you into them. In all the time I’ve been watching American Horror Story, this might be the most creeped out the series has ever made me feel. I’m sure the final product will still have its campy, silly moments, but these teasers sure are effective. Especially this next one, which has the creepiest clown yet.Seriously, why even bother bringing back Twisty at this point? Sledgy up there is nightmare-inducing enough. Especially paired with the most recent teaser. Released just this week, the latest clip puts us on a bus with clowns. You might be able to predict that one gets uncomfortably close. Knowing this does not make it any less unsettling when it happens. In addition to the cults, clowns, bees, and buses, we already know that the upcoming season will have something to do with the most recent election. The 11-episode story will begin on election night and comment on the fear that many Americans are feeling under the current administration. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said the series will focus on “people who are ignored by the current administration and who are afraid and feel terrorized that their lives are going to be taken away.” Exactly how the clown cult and bees fit into that, we’ll just have to wait and find out. This teaser from August 1 may give us an idea though. The clowns are clearly hunting down somebody. I wonder where she falls on the “people who are ignored by the current administration” spectrum. Also, is anyone else getting The Purge vibes from that video? American Horror Story has always worn its horror movie inspirations on its sleeve in the past. If Ryan Murphy is trying to make his version of political horror, there are certainly worse series he could crib from.American Horror Story: Cult premieres on September 5 on FX.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
